With an extensive history on working with ceramics Simon Stevens noticed that no one had really combined contemporary design with the ancient technique of using terracotta for cooling liquids.
To cool a terracotta vessel you just soak it in cold water. Water evaporates from the surface of terracotta cooling the contents within.
The design process Simon wanted to respect the craft traditions of terracotta but at the same time he wanted to bring a more contemporary feel to the Magisso Barware getting the right balance between aesthetics and function. By glazing the lower part of the Barware he produced an inbuilt saucer keeping the evaporating water, stored in the walls, off of the table surface. This also created a pleasing visual contrast of matt and shiny surfaces.
The clean and elegant form of the Magisso Barware has maximum surface area for evaporation, cooling the contents rapidly. The porous and mildly coarse surface also gives a user-friendly grip for the items.
Simon Stevens is an award winning product designer and a driving force in ceramic design. Simon has worked with some of World's most prestigious ceramic manufacturers and has taught and lectured on the subject throughout the UK. He has headed up Design Teams for lifestyle brands and now continues his design career in the established Simon Stevens Design Studio based in London. Simon's dynamic creativity resulted in his most successful designs being in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Art.
